Cycling is a fun addition to your camping adventure because you get to enjoy more of the great outdoors without being limited by mileage or destination.

When you add cycling to your camping trip, you’ll get to farther places, try out more challenging tracks, or just see more of nature’s beauty.

But whether you’re a long time cyclist or a newbie, we all need a little help in remembering what the essentials and tips are when it comes to cycling, especially when you’re doing it with the family.

Here is a basic checklist of what you need to prepare to make sure you have everything need for your cycling adventure.

Basic biking equipment

The basics are simply your bike and helmet.

If you’re going to rent or buy a bike, what you need to consider is the type of terrain you’ll be riding on. It’s important to know the kind of terrain first before selecting the right bike.

For short, fun rides that are family-friendly, cruisers are the way to go because they are easy and relaxing to ride. A city bike is your option if you’re riding for fitness, while a mountain bike will allow you to tackle rough terrain.

Meanwhile, whether you’re a beginner or an advanced cyclist, a helmet is an essential part of your riding experience to protect your head in case any untoward accidents happen.

Choose a helmet that has a good fit and quality. It should fit snugly on your head and comfortable enough to wear for a long time.

Proper cycling outfit

The clothes you need to bring depend on your biking activity. But whatever the type of riding you’ll be doing, comfortable clothes are the way to go. You don’t need to go all out with spandex like what hardcore bikers wear. You’ll be able to find the right clothes in your closet.

Quick drying shirts are a great option, but you can also opt for regular athletic shirts. Regular shorts or gym shorts/leggings will also help you ride your bike comfortably. Don’t forget to pack a jacket since the weather can get unpredictably hot or rainy when riding.

Water

Drinkable water is a basic need when it comes to cycling. You’ll be exploring areas far from your camp, so it’s best to bring water with you to prevent dehydration or to go back and forth just to drink water.

Light snacks

It’s also a good idea to bring snacks like protein bars or other energy-packed snacks to give you energy for another ride back to camp.

Sunscreen

Even when you brought a jacket to protect yourself from the sun, sunscreen will help you further protect yourself from the harsh sunlight. Make sure your sunscreen is water resistant and sweat-proof.

First Aid Kit

It’s always good practice to bring first aid kit with you, whatever outdoor activity you’ll be doing, including cycling. Essentials include bandages, tape, alcohol, and first-aid ointment. You can buy pre-packaged kits or just make your own.

Bike repair items

You can never be too sure about what could happen when cycling, so it’s best to be prepared for the worst. Don’t forget to bring bike repair items such as multi-tool, a patch or flat repair kit, and a spare tube just in case.

Camping essentials

There are a lot of things to bring when going camping. You need to bring cooking items such as pans, plates, cups, utensils, etc. You also need bathing essentials like shampoo, soap, towels, toothbrushes, toothpaste, etc., and sleeping items such as pillows, blankets, and sleeping bags.
